This is a combination of the technique described in my prior post and the HDRSoft Photomatix Tone Mapping plugin. I’ve mentioned several times in posts on other sites that I really don’t care for the over tone-mapped look of many “HDR” photos, but after reading the recent post by Rob Reiter on The Online Photographer, Digital B&W: The Expert View, I was reminded that “tone mapping” tools don’t need to be used in the context of “HDR” but can be used in the same way any other tool - to create additional input to a final image.

In this case, the input from the ‘Hidden in the Shadows’ technique provides the tone mapping tools with plenty of data to do their magic without any degradation in image quality.
